Rajya Sabha Election 2024
India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won all five Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, while the Congress party has won one seat in Karnataka.
The BJP's victory in Uttar Pradesh was widely expected, as the party has a strong majority in the state assembly. The party also won in Himachal Pradesh, where it does not have a majority in the assembly.
In Karnataka, the Congress won one seat, while the BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular) won one seat each. There were allegations of cross-voting in the state, with the BJP accusing the Congress of engineering defections.
The Rajya Sabha elections are held every two years, with one-third of the members retiring every six months. The elections are indirect, with members of the state legislatures voting to elect the Rajya Sabha members.
The BJP is seen as the big winner out of these elections, as it has consolidated its position in Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, and made gains in Karnataka. The Congress party, on the other hand, has suffered a setback, losing ground in its traditional strongholds.
In Karnataka, the Congress won three seats and the BJP won one seat. The winning Congress candidates are Ajay Maken, Syed Naseer Hussain, and GC Chandrasekhar. The winning BJP candidate is Narayana Bandage.
In Himachal Pradesh, the BJP candidate Harsh Mahajan won.
In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP won eight seats and the Samajwadi Party won two seats.
